The 6 most notorious mood killers

SUGAR

Textbox Section

Sugar and refined carbohydrates rob your body of nutrients and cause your blood sugar levels to quickly spike and then crash. Low blood sugar levels can cause you to feel anxious or depressed

CAFFEINE

Caffeine is a stimulant found in coffee, tea, chocolate and fizzy drinks. It can help boost our energy levels by stimulating the release of adrenaline and cortisol, but too much of it can cause us to feel stressed-out and anxious. The recommended safe dosage is about 300mg per day - that's about 2 or 3 cups of coffee. Caffeine is very good at keeping us awake, so try to avoid it for at 4-6 hours before you go to bed - that's how long it takes for your body to process it.

NICOTINE

Nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms, lethal toxins and decreased oxygen levels means smokers experience higher than average levels of stress and anxiety, along with dozens and dozens of other mental and physical health problems. This is one mood killer you should try to steer clear of completely.

ALCOHOL

Alcohol may temporarily relieve stress and boost your mood (sometimes), but it also depletes nutrients, reduces cognitive functioning and and has been shown to significantly increases the risk of developing depression and high levels of anxiety. If you do drink alcohol, keep it down to 1 or 2 units per day ( E.g. 1 or 2 glasses of wine). This should help you to avoid most of those nasty side effects.

GLUTEN

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. For those who suffer from gluten sensitivity, consuming anything that contains gluten can trigger a stress response and cause feelings of stress and anxiety. To see if you're sensitive to gluten, try eliminating it from your diet for a few days and see how it makes you feel.

JUNK FOOD

Studies show that the more junk food a person eats, the more likely they are to suffer from poor mental health. Processed junk food like hamburgers, pizzas, chips and sweets are usually high in calories but lack the vitamins and minerals you need to stay happy and healthy.
